The GT-5000 grip tape is perfect for the grips and slides of my handguns that don't have either a very aggressive grip texture or any forward slide serrations--or both. Prior to using this product I was using black skateboard tape that, although that particular product did produce the desired affect, was also responsible for tearing-up many of my dress shirts. Problem solved: no more ruined shirts!

It is easy to cut to the desired portion and length, and super simple to apply. You can spend a lot of money with custom stippling, but if you're on a budget or simply prefer function over form, these just might be the best option going.

Works great on the back of a cell phone

I've used this grip tape on three cell phones. I put a strip on the back, offset to the left side (of the back). It provides sufficient finger friction that I've never needed a case and always had a secure hold.
I tried Dragon Grips hexagon stickers, but they tended to shift around over time.
I got some skateboard tape to try out, but it was too scratchy so I didn't actually use it.
My only complaint is that the ends are not cut square, so I have to snip off a little bit to get a clean angle on both ends.
